How to Clean and Maintain Your MG Seat Covers - MGS-001 Care Guide

Keep your MGS-001 seat covers looking factory-fresh. Learn routine cleaning tips, stain removal methods, and what to avoid to protect your covers.

The MGS-001 uses a layered construction combining an Ice Silk centre panel with a PU leather outer surface. Each material has different properties and responds differently to cleaning products. Following this guide will keep your covers looking factory-fresh and extend their lifespan well beyond the 2-year mark.

    Materials at a Glance

Understanding which panel you're cleaning changes the approach. When in doubt, treat the whole cover as Ice Silk: it's the more delicate material.

Routine Cleaning (Weekly or After Use)

    • Use a soft microfibre cloth, lightly dampened with water.
    • Wipe the PU leather panels in long strokes, following the grain of the material.
    • For the Ice Silk centre panel, use a gentler dabbing motion rather than rubbing.
    • Allow to air dry naturally, do not use a hairdryer or leave the car with windows closed in direct sun immediately after cleaning.
    • For dust and loose debris, a soft-bristle brush or handheld vacuum on low suction works well before wiping.

    Removing Common Stains

Act quickly, the PU outer surface is water-resistant, which means fresh spills bead up and can be blotted away cleanly. Once a liquid soaks into the Ice Silk panel it becomes harder to lift.

    Coffee and Drinks

    1. Blot immediately with a dry microfibre cloth, do not rub.
    2. Dampen a fresh cloth with cold water and blot again.
    3. If a mark remains, apply a small amount of diluted washing-up liquid (1 part soap to 10 parts water) to the cloth, never directly to the cover.
    4. Blot gently, then wipe with a clean damp cloth to remove any soap residue.
    5. Air dry.

    Grease and Food

    1. Use a dry cloth to remove any solid residue first.
    2. Apply a small amount of isopropyl alcohol (IPA, 70%) to a cloth, PU panels only, not Ice Silk.
    3. Dab the stain, do not scrub.
    4. Follow with a clean damp cloth and air dry.
    5. For Ice Silk panels with grease: diluted washing-up liquid solution only, IPA can damage the fibre texture.

    Mud and Dirt

    1. Let it dry completely first. Attempting to clean wet mud spreads it further.
    2. Brush away loose material with a soft brush.
    3. Wipe with a damp microfibre cloth.
    4. If a residue remains, use diluted soap solution as above.

    Ink and Dye Transfer

Dye transfer onto light-coloured stitching areas is the most stubborn stain type on PU leather covers. Apply a small amount of IPA to a cotton pad and work from the outside of the stain inward. Repeat with fresh cotton pads. Some deep dye transfer may not lift fully, consistent cleaning after each journey prevents build-up.

    Seasonal Care: Summer and Heat

    • Do not apply silicone-based dashboard or leather shine products to the seat covers, they make the surface slippery, which defeats the purpose of a fitted cover and creates a safety issue.
    • If the car has been parked in direct sun for hours, open windows and let the interior cool before sitting down, this protects both the cover and your skin.
    • A windscreen sunshade reduces peak interior temperature significantly and is the single most effective way to protect all interior materials including the MGS-001.

    Seasonal Care: Winter

    • Cold does not damage PU leather or Ice Silk, but condensation can.
    • If the car has been very cold overnight, the PU surface may feel stiff temporarily, this resolves within a few minutes of the heating running.
    • Avoid cleaning with water in sub-zero conditions; the cover is best cleaned indoors or after the car has warmed up.

    Longevity Best Practices

    • Wipe down weekly, even if nothing looks dirty, oils from clothing accumulate on PU leather and dull the surface over time.
    • Check the hooks and disc anchors every few months, if any elastic has loosened, re-anchor before the cover starts shifting. A shifting cover wears faster than one that sits flush.
    • Avoid sharp objects in rear pockets, keys, pens, and metal buckles are the main cause of surface scratches.
    • For fleet use, a wipe-down between drivers (especially on the headrest covers) extends appearance significantly and reduces deep cleaning frequency.

    Recommended Cleaning Products

    • Microfibre cloths, essential, use a clean one each session.
    • Isopropyl alcohol 70%, for grease on PU panels only.
    • Diluted washing-up liquid, universal, safe for all panels.
    • Soft-bristle brush, for dry debris before wiping.
    • Windscreen sunshade, best long-term protection investment.

    Important: Products to Avoid

Products marketed as 'leather conditioners' are not suitable for PU leather, they are formulated for genuine hide and can leave residue on synthetic surfaces.
